Description
A heavy-duty, high-torque machine engineered to mount and demount large, stiff, and heavy truck, bus, and heavy equipment tires onto their corresponding single-piece or multi-piece rims.
How It Works
It uses powerful mechanical force, specialized tooling, and often a powered assist table to overcome the high bead strength of truck tires. Key actions include:
Bead Breaking: A heavy vertical or horizontal arm with a blunt tool forcefully breaks the tire’s bead away from the rim flange.
Bead Manipulation: Powered rollers or a swing arm lift and maneuver the stiff bead over the rim edge during dismounting and mounting.
Table Functions: A motorized, rotating table spins the assembly while a specialized “duckhead” or roller tool works the bead on or off.
Key Design Features
High Torque & Force: Significantly more powerful than a passenger car changer.
Robust Construction: Reinforced steel frame, arms, and clamps to handle assemblies weighing hundreds of pounds.
Large Rim Capacity: Accommodates rim diameters from 15″ up to 65″, with very wide widths (for wide-base singles).
Multi-Piece Rim Compatibility: Essential for many truck applications. Requires specific cones and clamps, and EXTREME CAUTION.
Power Options: Usually 3-phase electric or pneumatic for the bead breaker and table motor.
Primary Applications
Commercial Truck & Bus Fleets: 10R22.5, 11R24.5, 295/75R22.5, etc.
Agricultural & Forestry: Tractor, combine, and skidder tires.
Construction & Mining (OTR): Loader, dozer, and haul truck tires on smaller rims.
Heavy-Duty Trailers & RVs.
Critical Safety & Operational Rules
Secure the Assembly: The wheel must be clamped firmly to the rotating table with the correct cone/plate before any operation. A loose assembly is a deadly projectile.
Deflate Completely & De-bead: Ensure the tire is fully deflated and the bead is completely broken from the rim on both sides before attempting demounting.
Use Truck-Specific Tooling: Never use passenger car tooling. Use the correct duckhead, bead roller, and rim protectors designed for truck tire diameters and sidewall stiffness.
Lubricate Generously: Apply tire mounting lubricant to both beads and rim edges to reduce friction and prevent bead/wire damage.
Hands-Free Operation: Use the machine’s controls and tools. Never place hands or fingers between the tire bead and rim during the mount/demount cycle.
Multi-Piece Rim EXTREME DANGER: Understand the specific lock ring/demount procedure. Never service a multi-piece rim without proper training. A misassembled lock ring can explode with lethal force during inflation.
Inflate in a Safety Cage: ALWAYS inflate a newly mounted heavy-duty tire inside a reinforced tire inflation safety cage with an extension hose and clip-on chuck. This is non-negotiable.
Bottom Line
A heavy-duty tire changer is a specialized, high-risk piece of commercial shop equipment. It is essential for safely servicing truck tires, a task that is physically impossible and extremely dangerous to perform manually. Operator training, strict adherence to safety procedures (especially for multi-piece rims), and the mandatory use of an inflation cage are critical to prevent catastrophic injury or death. It is a tool for professionals who respect the immense stored energy in a heavy-duty tire and rim assembly.
