Description

A mechanical or hydraulic device used to temporarily raise one end or a section of a vehicle off the ground, providing clearance for maintenance, tire changes, or inspection.

How It Works
It uses mechanical leverage (scissor jack) or hydraulic pressure (bottle/floor jack) to lift a vertical piston or saddle against the vehicle’s frame or lift point.

Main Types

Floor Jack (Hydraulic): Most common in shops. Low-profile, rolls under vehicle, uses long handle to pump and lift quickly. High capacity (1.5-3+ tons).

Bottle Jack: Compact, powerful hydraulic jack. Often used for heavy vehicles/trucks. Can be unstable if not properly secured.

Scissor Jack: Compact, mechanical (turns a screw). Usually included with vehicle spare tire kit. Low capacity, slow, and less stable.

Hi-Lift/Farm Jack: Manual, external jack for off-road/recovery. Can lift from bumper or frame. Requires skill and caution.

Primary Purpose

Lifting only — to create clearance for placing jack stands or for quick tire changes.

NOT for supporting a vehicle during work underneath.

Critical Safety Rules

Jack Stands Are Mandatory: NEVER get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Jacks can fail or settle.

Lift on Designated Points: Use only the vehicle’s reinforced jack points (see owner’s manual). Never lift on body panels, suspension, or oil pans.

Use on Solid, Level Ground: Only on concrete or equally solid, flat surfaces.

Check Weight Rating: Jack capacity must exceed the vehicle’s weight at the lift point.

Chock Wheels: Always chock wheels on the opposite end of the vehicle before lifting.

Pump Smoothly & Watch Stability: If the vehicle shifts or leans, lower it immediately and reposition.

Inspect Before Use: Check hydraulic jacks for fluid leaks, scissor jacks for thread wear.

Bottom Line
A jack lift is an essential first-step tool for raising a vehicle, but it is only a lifting device, not a support device. Safe procedure always involves using it in combination with jack stands before any work underneath.
