What It Is
A heavy-duty, mobile lifting frame used to remove, install, and reposition an engine and transmission assembly from a vehicle. It is the primary tool for major powertrain work in any automotive shop.

How It Works
It uses a hydraulic ram to lift a pivoting boom arm via a chain or strap. This provides the mechanical advantage to hoist the engine’s weight. The crane is mounted on casters, allowing the entire assembly to be rolled out from the engine bay once lifted.

Key Components

Hydraulic Ram: The powered lifting cylinder, operated by a hand pump or foot pedal.

Adjustable Boom: Extends or retracts to balance the load’s center of gravity.

Critical Safety & Operating Rules

Capacity is Absolute: Never exceed the rated capacity. Remember to include the weight of the transmission, fluids, and all accessories.

Use a Load Leveler: This is essential for safe tilting to clear the engine bay. Attach it between the crane hook and the engine’s lifting points.

Secure the Load Properly: Use the engine’s manufacturer-provided lifting points with proper bolts or a suitable, rated engine sling. Double-check all connections.

Center the Load & Minimize Boom Extension: Keep the engine’s weight as close to the crane’s vertical post as possible. The more the boom is extended, the lower the safe lifting capacity.

Ensure Stability: Use only on a clean, level, solid floor (concrete). Keep the crane’s legs fully extended and locked. Never move the crane with the load raised high—lower it to a safe transport height first.

Clear the Path: Slowly lift and maneuver, ensuring the engine clears the radiator, wiring, body panels, and other obstructions. Have a spotter guide you.

Secure After Removal: Once the engine is out, immediately lower it onto a stable engine stand or secured cribbing—never leave it suspended on the crane.
